A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the city of Bandar Genaveh, in the Bushehr province in southwestern Iran, on Sunday, where the damage is being investigated.
The earthquake, whose epicenter was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers, affected the Kohguiluye-Boyer Ahmad, Fars and Khuzstan provinces, with no damage or casualties being reported for the time being, Iran’s state television reported.
The Iranian Emergency spokesman, Moytaba Jaledí, reported that fifty ambulances and five ambulance buses have been sent to the region and that three field hospitals are on alert if necessary.
The earthquake took place at 11.11 local time (06.41 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, as recorded by the Iran Seismological Center, and after that there have been two aftershocks so far, the largest of which is 4.5 degrees in the Richter scale.
The city of Bandar Genaveh is located 132 kilometers from the city of Bushehr, where a major Iranian nuclear power plant is located. It is located about 1,030 kilometers from the capital, Tehran.
Iran has a strong seismic activity since the country is located on the boundary of several tectonic plates and is crossed by several faults.
In November 2017, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed 620 people and injured more than 12,000 in the northwestern province of Kermanshah, while in December 2003 nearly 30,000 people perished in another in the southern town of Bam.
