DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the Daytona 500 in double overtime on bail Sunday night in “The Great American Race’s” longest event.
The two extensions took the 65th edition of the race to a record 212 laps, a dozen over the scheduled distance and a whopping 530 miles.
Stenhouse’s victory, in a Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing, a one-car team owned by former NBA player Brad Daugherty, was the third of his career. JTG is the first single-seater team to win the Daytona 500 since The Wood Brothers Racing did it with Trevor Bayne in 2011.
Stenhouse’s other victories came in 2017, at Talladega and the summer race at Daytona.
Now 35, the native of Olive Branch, Mississippi, takes another victory at Daytona, in the biggest race of the NASCAR season. And it happened in the first race meeting with team manager Mike Kelly, which led him to two Xfinity Series championships early in his career.
Defending Cup champion Joey Logano finished second in a Penske Ford team he won last year with Austin Cindric. Christopher Bell finished third in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
Mexican Daniel Suárez finished seventh with the Trackhouse Racing team.
