A meeting of officials at the Municipal Palace of Santiago Amoltepec, in Oaxacathe afternoon of February 14 was interrupted by violence, as a group of armed civilians tried to attempt his life.

According to official city sources, the target of the attack was Mayor Mario Hernández Garcíawho was in the property with the authorities of the neighboring municipality of Santiago Textitlán.

The attackers arrived at the government compound heavily equipped “with weapons for the exclusive use of the army”, town hall staff reported. According to local media confirmations, they were carrying high caliber weapons.

In the presence of the armed command and their intention to attack the participants in the rally, the municipal police guarding the municipal headquarters responded to the attack and a clash broke out.

The final toll of the fight was five dead. The preliminary reports did not contain information on the identity of the attackers, but they were revealed a few hours later by the authorities of the municipality itself.

Apparently three of the assailants killed they were sons of the former mayor of Santiago Amoltepec, Abel García Santiago, who was the predecessor of Hernández García in the period 2020-2022. The other two people who died in the exchange of bullets were believed to have been the attackers’ bodyguards and held positions with the state police. In addition, one person was injured.

“We await the prompt intervention of our state and federal authorities to clarify these unfortunate events that have occurred in our municipality,” Santiago Amoltepec authorities wrote at the end of the statement in which they shared details of the incident. offensive.

Until this edition, no arrests or other progress has been reported regarding these events. For its part, the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) the state deployed a protection and surveillance operation in the area on the instructions of the governor Solomon Jara Cross.

Despite the fact that no official version has been established regarding the reasons why the sons of former mayor Abel García tried to assassinate Mario Hernández, this episode of violence recalled an attack that the current municipal president suffered before, during the 2019 electoral process.

It should be noted that, in the said delimitation, the process of electing mayors consists of holding three general assemblies, during which citizens vote by a show of hands.

Mario Hernández was the winner of the first assembly on May 20, 2019 with a total of 1,925 votes. Later it was established that the second congregation would be held on October 12. That day, after receiving multiple threats, Mario Hernández arrived at the assembly with a bulletproof vest under the clothes. When he was called to take a seat at the debating table and name his proposal as teller, two people shot him in the chest.

“When I received the two bullets in the chest, then I reacted by throwing myself on the ground and the assailants continued to shoot me but it was no longer my turn, but two people, two citizens who were behind me,” Hernández told Garcia on that occasion to the local press.

After the attack, hundreds of people fled the location, so it was assumed the rally would be called off. However, this did not happen. The then mayor Felipe Lopez Sanchez, ordered the session to continue. At the end of the day, Abel García Santiago won with 675 votes.

In May 2020, despite the acts of violence, the Electoral Court of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF) declared valid the election of Santiago Amoltepec and ratified the victory of Abel García.
