Through a press release, relatives of missing persons denounced that once again the head of the government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaumpostponed a meeting that had been agreed to discuss the issue of the memorial that the authorities intend to place in the Glorieta of the Missing.

The argument that the authorities of the undersecretary of the government of the capital gave to the families not to hold the meeting was that the president could not receive them “for reasons of the agenda”.

“We will wait for the government of Mexico to contact us in the next few hours to plan a new meeting in 15 days maximum (from March 15, 2023). We remind the Head of Government that if she has no response to the request for a meeting we will look for you in all your events until the meeting is carried out”, could we read in the document distributed by the group of families.

The main concern expressed by the group is that said meeting with Sheinbaum Pardo has been postponed for more than nine months, since on June 5, 2022, the official promised to hold a meeting with the families of the missing persons.

Later, on March 9, during a meeting with the members of the group which defends the Antimonumenta in the roundabout of women who fight (formerly known as Glorieta a Colón), Sheinbaum announced that his meeting with the families would take place on Thursday, March 16.

However, after the cancellation they were notified of, a new date for the dialogue was not set. “Today afternoon, the response was that due to agenda issues, the meeting which had been waiting for over 9 months would be postponed. How long will it take (Sheinbaum) to meet the families of the missing persons?“Questioned the group on social networks.

The memorial project proposed by the government of CDMX consists of installation of 20 obelisks memorials (between 1.60 and two meters), each with a poem inscribed in memory of the deceased, as well as the placement of eight pieces of volcanic stone.

This initiative aroused the disgust of the families because, as they mentioned, at no time were they consulted to design the memorial that would honor their loved ones.

“It seems to us, at least, a lack of respect not to open up to dialogue with the families who inhabit the urban space and, even more, to make the same mistake of the genocidal government of Felipe Calderón with his despicable memorial and offensive without memory of Campo Marte. We take the opportunity to tell him that we will not accept this mockery as a memory (…) and if it persists that day it will be on these stones that we will build our memorial“, they warned in February 2023.

Claudia Sheinbaum’s government has been repeatedly criticized by families of missing persons for, they say, promoting a “politics of oblivion”.

Recall that in November 2022, the capital’s administration staff erased and removed the faces and search files of unlocated people that various groups had placed in the Glorieta de las y los Desaparecidos (formerly Glorieta de la Palma ).

Despite the use of public resources to hide the existence of missing people por parte del gobierno, no nos detendrán para denunciar y recordarles que el cambio de la 4T est una simulación que muestra incapacidad por hacer algo diferente y lograr que haya verdad y justice para quienes vivimos esta tragedia humanitaria”, manifestaron en aquel entonces colectivos defensores de human rights.
