The Chancellor cafe santiago I took a picture with the US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken at the G20 summit in India. In a brief meeting, the officials discussed human rights and international issues.
“Good conversation with Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero at the G20 this afternoon. We talked about the importance of protecting the democracyhuman rights, food security and our shared commitment to a safe and prosperous hemisphere,” Blinken posted on his Twitter account along with photos from the meeting.
According to photos released by the US official, It was not a “bilateral” meeting but a “pool apart”that is, a short meeting that takes place at one point without much depth in approaching the issues.
Instead, Blinken held a bilateral meeting with Brazil’s foreign minister, Mauro Vieraon the sidelines of a G20 ministerial meeting in New Delhi, India.

As noted in a statement from the US State Department, Blinken thanked Vieira “for Brazil’s support for the resolution on Ukraine February 23 at the UN General Assembly. Additionally, he reaffirmed U.S. support for Brazil ahead of its G20 presidency in 2024.
“Secretary Blinken also reaffirmed our commitment to increasing transparent and mutually beneficial bilateral trade and investment with Brazil. The Secretary and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs have agreed that U.S. support for Brazil’s climate and deforestation program is essential,” they added.
The difference noted between Blinken’s meeting with Brazil and Argentina is added to the visit of Lula da Silva to the United States, where he was received by Joe Biden in the White House as regional leader, a place they failed to fill Alberto Fernandez nor other South American leaders.
In July last year, Fernández had planned to travel to Washington, but Biden had to cancel the meeting after contracting COVID-19.
Alberto Fernández’s visit to the United States had a geopolitical and commercial dimension that began to fade over the weeks. The original schedule included DC, Houston and New York, but the president’s public positions and the summer season have dampened the expectations of Balcarce 50.
Biden did not want to offer Alberto Fernández a visit with a busy schedule, but he was determined to receive him in the Oval Office because – finally – the head of state participated in the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles. The Democratic leader’s reluctance is linked to the promise that Alberto Fernández made to Vladimir Putin during their meeting in the Kremlin.
On this occasion, before the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Alberto Fernández had proposed to Putin Argentina as Moscow’s gateway to Latin America. Biden rejects this predisposition of the Argentine president and his geopolitical reluctance was expressed in his decision to receive him for a short period in the Oval Room.
