Russia said on Monday that the plan proposed last week by China to solve the war in ukraine “deserved attention”, but that the conditions necessary for a “peaceful” solution have not been met “for the moment”.

“We consider the plan of our Chinese friends with great attention (…) It’s a long process. For the moment, we do not see the premises for this issue to take a peaceful path.Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The special military operation (in Ukraine) continues“, he added.

On Friday, the Chinese regime presented a document in which it explains in twelve points its “position for a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine” and in which it underlines the need for “dialogue and negotiations” and “respect for the sovereignty of countries”. The initiative also envisages a cessation of hostilities, the opening of negotiations, an exchange of prisoners, the protection of nuclear power plants and the lifting of “unilateral” sanctions.

The Chinese plan had already been greeted with skepticism by Western countries. The United States noted that the document should have remained in the first two lines, which call for respecting the sovereignty of countries.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Friday that China’s peace proposal for Ukraine needed improvement “to be credible” and “so that China is not seen as biased” in the conflict.

SIf China seeks to impose itself as a mediator in this conflict, its position as an ally of Russia disqualifies it in the eyes of the West, which supports Ukraine. The publication of the proposal follows allegations that Xi Jinping was planning to supply arms to Moscow, a claim that Beijing has dismissed as false.

So far, Russia and Ukraine have shown no serious willingness to start negotiationsand reacted cautiously to the Asian giant’s proposal.

On the other hand, the Kremlin described Monday as “absurd” the new package of sanctions imposed on Friday by the European Union (EU) to Russia, and which targets 121 individuals and entities. “This is all nonsense. We see that they place anyone under sanctions (…), just to make new lists,” Peskov said, adding that these measures were not going to “affect” the sanctioned people.
