NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Rodgers announced Wednesday that he plans to play for the New York Jets in 2023 after 18 seasons in Green Bay, with the four-time NFL MVP awaiting a trade from the Packers.
Rodgers opened up about his future while appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show” on YouTube and Sirius XM. The 39-year-old quarterback said he felt the Packers wanted a trade and were starting Jordan Love, their 2020 first-round pick.
“Right now, sitting here, starting Friday, I made it clear that my intention was to play, and my intention was to play for the New York Jets. “I didn’t object to anything. This is the compensation the Packers want to receive for me, they are resisting.
Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy acknowledged that the team allowed the Jets to speak with Rodgers. The Jets sent an entourage that would have included owner Woody Johnson, head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas to meet Rodgers at his Southern California residence last week.
Rodgers said he enjoyed accumulating 18 seasons in Green Bay, but said now was the time for the Packers to “do the right thing.”
Rodgers’ statements come after several days of speculation over the end of his stay in Green Bay. Murphy seemed to talk about Rodgers like a thing of the past when he was interviewed by Green Bay TV this week.
“Very few players can play on the same team,” Murphy told WBAY. “Of course, Brett (Favre) had a great race. Aaron had a great race here. No matter what, Aaron will be in the Hall of Fame. He will be in our Hall of Fame. He will come back and we will remove his number. These are things that we have to manage as a team. We’re trying to achieve something that’s good for both Aaron and us.”
The Jets’ interest in Rodgers came in trying to put together the longest active drought without making the playoffs. They lost the last six games to go 7-10 last season. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2010.
