A Los Angeles judge on Wednesday sentenced the man convicted of take down rapper Nipsey Hussle to 60 years in prison without the right to early release, after hearing testimony about the enormous cost of the death of the hip-hop star and neighborhood leader, as well as the life of mental illness and the problems the man who shot him had.

Following a postponement, Superior Court Judge H. Clay Jacke II entered judgment for Eric R. Holder Jr., 33, who was found guilty of premeditated homicide for the Grammy-nominated artist’s death, which occurred in 2019 outside the Hussle-founded clothing store, The Marathon, in the South Los Angeles neighborhood where the two grew up in very similar circumstances. Hussle was 33 when he died.

‘I am well aware of what has been presented as Mr Holder’s sanity,’ Judge Jacke said. “I also considered the devastation caused to the victims and their families. I think that sentence balances the two.”

After a month-long trial, the jury also found Holder guilty in July of two counts of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a firearm for the Shots injured two other men who were at the scene and survived.

Jacke sentenced Holder to 25 years without parole for the murder and an additional 25 years for aggravated firearm and 10 years for assault with a firearm. He fixed other additional sentences and ordered that the others be served simultaneously. He also credited Holder for the nearly four years he has been in prison since the murder.

Holder, dressed in an orange prisoner’s uniform, stared straight ahead during the proceedings and did not react as the sentence was read. He only spoke to tell the judge he understood the circumstances when asked.

In a crime impact statement filed before sentencing, Herman “Cowboy” Douglas, a close friend of Hussle who was with him when he was killed and testified at his trial, told the judge that the murder was a loss. and for the South Los Angeles community where Hussle was a prominent businessman and inspiration.

“Nipsey was my friend, he was like a son, he was like a father,” Douglas said. “In our community, we have lost everything, everything we worked for. One man’s mistake. One man’s action ruined an entire community.”

Douglas said Hussle’s store and other businesses he owned or supported have closed, meaning “the boys have nothing to do.” Douglas told the judge, “I don’t care what they give this guy. It is not time. I just want to know why. The world wants to know why. Why would anyone do that?”

The actress Lawrence Londonwho was Hussle’s partner and mother of his two young children, did not attend any of the trial hearings, nor any of his relatives, and they were not expected to comment after sentencing.

Hussle, real name Ermias Asghedom, and Holder had known each other since childhood members of the Rollin ’60s street gang in South Los Angeles. Both were aspiring rappers. But Holder never had the same success as Hussle, who became a local hero and a celebrity in the United States.

The evidence against Holder was so overwhelming, with witnesses on security video recording his arrival, the shooting and his departure, that his attorney admitted during the trial that he had shot Hussle.

But Holder’s attorney, Aaron Jansen, argued to the jury that the circumstances of the shooting meant a less severe verdict of intentional homicide could be considered. The jury returned with a verdict of first degree murder after six hours of deliberation.

A year after his death, Hussle was sacked at a funeral at the arena then known as Staples Center, and celebrated with a Grammy performance that included DJ Khaled and John Legend.
