COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who after half a century reigned as Europe’s longest-serving monarch, has had “major back surgery” and is “well and stable,” given the circumstances”.

The 82-year-old monarch will remain hospitalized “for some time” before a period of convalescence and rehabilitation, according to the royal household.

Several of the monarch’s official engagements have been postponed, canceled or assigned to other members of the royal family.

The Queen’s eldest son, Crown Prince Frederick and his wife, Crown Princess Maria, will also increase their duties, as will the Queen’s sister, Princess Benedicta, the palace announced on Wednesday hours after the operation.
