President Nayib Bukele on Sunday called on all the forces of El Salvador to unite to work for the benefit of the country, but said he will respect the will of the people expressed in the elections and will not negotiate with the two parties that ruled in the last three decades.

“On February 28, the Salvadoran people spoke and could not speak louder. A new party won more deputies than any party in the history of our country, “said the president in a message broadcast on radio and television.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal formalized the final scrutiny of the municipal, legislative and Central American Parliament elections and confirmed that the New Ideas party – from Bukele – will govern the majority of the mayors and will control the Congress.

According to the official results, the New Ideas party, which is participating for the first time in an electoral process, won 56 of the 84 seats in the Legislative Assembly, giving it a two-thirds majority. This means that he will be able to elect the new attorney general, the magistrates of the Supreme Court and the attorney for the Defense of Human Rights, essentially all those who have criticized the actions of the Bukele government.

The president called for dialogue with all the forces in the country, and said that they will speak with organizations, academics, analysts, businessmen, unions, unions and, above all, with the population.

But “we will not negotiate with Arena (Nationalist Republican Alliance), FMLN (Farabundo Martí Front for National Liberation) and their satellites. Not because of arrogance, but because that was the mandate of the Salvadoran people (at the polls), not to negotiate with the same old people ”.

According to the final vote, Arena —who ruled the country for 20 years (1989-2009) and has maintained control of the majority of the mayoralties and has controlled the decisions of Congress—, lost more than half of the seats, and 37 deputies grew to 14.

For its part, the FMLN party of ex-guerrillas, which ruled the country for 10 years and had remained the second political force with its 23 deputies, won only a few seats.

The Great Alliance for National Unity (GANA) has five deputies; the National Concertación Party (PCN), two; the Christian Democratic parties (PDC), VAMOS and Nuestro Tiempo, one each.

Bukele lashed out at those who say democracy is in danger and the country is headed for dictatorship.

“There is nothing more illogical than saying that a democracy is in danger because the people’s decision, freely expressed at the polls, is respected,” he said.

“I wonder: What democracy are they talking about? From a democracy where they choose who should win. It means that they only liked democracy when those who benefited them won, ”he added.

The New Ideas party will also govern 152 of the 262 municipalities, Arena will govern 35, the FMLN 30, GANA 27, the PCN 14; the PDC in three and LET’S GO in one.

New Ideas will win 14 seats out of the 20 in dispute for the Central American Parliament; Arena with three; the FMLN with one; the PCN, one, and WINS one.

As of May 1, the legislative majority of New Ideas would put an end to the obstacles that Bukele has faced in the approval of his initiatives.
