Guatemala, March 5. Paraguay striker Marcelo Ferreira Rodriguez scored a brace in Iztapa’s 4-0 win over Achuapa on Sunday in the 11th round of the 2023 Guatemalan Clausura soccer tournament.

The two goals helped 34-year-old Ferreira Rodríguez become Guatemala’s top scorer, tied with local striker Óscar Santis of Antigua Guatemala.

The Paraguayan footballer scored five goals in 988 minutes while Santis scored the same number of goals in 837 minutes.

With the victory, Iztapa climbed to sixth place in the Guatemalan tournament, currently dominated by leader Xelajú with 24 points.

Precisely, Xelajú drew 0-0 on Saturday with Guastatoya, its closest rival, with 21 units in second place.

THE GUATEMALA CLASSIC

The Guatemalan derby between Municipal and Comunicaciones, the country’s two most popular and winning clubs, ended 3-3 on Saturday.

The goals for the Municipal, led by the Paraguayan José Saturnino Cardozo, passed through Antonio de Jesús López, Pedro Altán and the Argentinian Matías Rotondi.

For Communications, under the orders of the Uruguayan William Coito Olivera, the Panamanians Azarías Londoño and Abdiel Sánchez scored, as well as José Manuel Contreras.

For his part, the Guatemalan champion, Cobán Imperial, won his second victory of the tournament by beating Malacateco at home, thanks to a solitary goal from Miguel Galindo.

In other Matchday 11 matches in Guatemalan football, Mixco beat Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa 1-0, in a duel between two teams seeking not to be relegated, while Xinabajul beat Antigua 3-1. EFE
