The rains that fell last night in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, the strongest in the last 8 years, caused the death of a woman and multiple material damages, the authorities reported Thursday.

In Algés (municipality of Oeiras), 10 kilometers from Lisbon, a 55-year-old woman died after the house she was in was flooded, the national commander of the Civil Protection Emergency, André, reported this morning at a press conference.

The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, explained in another press conference that 87 millimeters of water fell in the capital in eight hours, “something that had not been seen since 2014”, which generated at least 300 occurrences, “a lot of material damage” and forced to rescue more than 14 people.

However, he recalled that in the last three months there have already been “three events of this nature”, which shows that “climatic alterations exist” and “are here to stay”, for which reason he defended a better drainage system in the city than his government has already begun to push.

Civil Protection has warned the population to remain alert in the Central and Southern regions of Portugal in the face of the risk of new rains and extreme events this Thursday and to take special precautions when driving.

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, lamented the death of “the lady who died in these dramatic conditions” and agreed with Moedas in advocating for the renovation and improvement of the drainage system in the capital’s metropolitan area.
