March 14 (Reuters) – The Russian government claimed on Tuesday that Kiev’s stance means Russia’s goals in Ukraine can only be achieved through military force, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian state news agencies.

“We have to achieve our goals. At the moment this is only possible by military means due to the current position of the Kiev regime,” Peskov said.

Russia says it is fighting in Ukraine to “liberate” Russian speakers in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine from what it called a “neo-Nazi regime” in Kiev.

Ukraine and the West claim that this is an unfounded pretext to justify a war of aggression and Moscow’s attempts to seize large swathes of Ukrainian territory.

Moscow blamed Kiev for the failure of ceasefire talks, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he would only consider peace agreements when Russian troops leave Ukrainian territory.
