Weather conditions are also making themselves felt in the African country.
Climate change is a reality, but not only Spain is experiencing its effects in recent months and, one of its neighbors, Morocco is also suffering serious problems with the production of some foods that used to produce during the fall.
As reported by Freshplaza, the African country has once again demanded from several Mediterranean countries some of the most necessary products, but which tend to be less and less available in its territory.
The Moroccan fruit exporter El Yazid Bennouna has pointed out to the aforementioned media that imports are intended to cover the off-season but in the last two years it has been accentuated.
“When Moroccan produce is available, imports cannot compete either in price or quality. That is why our import calendars are counter-seasonal,” he said.
Bennouna has detailed to the mentioned means that, with the change of the meteorological conditions, every time increases “the delay the beginning of the seasons of many fruits in Morocco”, something that diminishes of direct form to the production.
That is why the African country opts for imports from some countries, such as Spain. “There is a strong demand for kiwis, which we now export from Italy and Greece; mushrooms, chicory and pears from Spain; pineapples from Costa Rica; exotic and tropical fruits from Indonesia and Thailand; ginger from China, and apples from Italy,” he reasoned.
Morocco has tried to counteract the lower production, with a reduction in exports, while domestic demand has also been reduced. “The price parameter remains decisive and prevents a substantial increase in imports,” he explained.
