More than 2,600 Cubans who tried to migrate were sent back to their country from different nations so far this year, the island’s Interior Ministry (Minint) reported on Monday, including the last 75 returned by the United States.
The United States Coast Guard (SGC) handed over a group of rafters – 54 men, 20 women and a minor, most residing in the provinces of Matanzas (west) and Granma (east) – to the Cuban authorities the day before by the port of Orozco (west).
These undocumented immigrants had participated in six illegal exits from the country by sea and then they were intercepted by the US Coast Guard, the Minint note said.
He also clarified that with this operation -the number 25 of the North American Coast Guard Service in 2022- they are a total of 1,918 Cuban chevrons returned.
One of those now being fired is in custody “for allegedly committing serious criminal acts, which were investigated prior to his departure”, he added.
Last week they were expelled other groups of irregular migrants by the governments of Mexico (22 people), the Bahamas (128) and the United States (41).
The Cuban regime says it maintains its commitment”with regular, safe and orderly migration» and insists on «the conditions of danger and risk life represented by illegal departures from the country by sea”.
In addition to the Bahamas, Mexico and the United States, so far this year migrants from the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic have also been deported to Cuba.
In the case of the United States, since last October 1 – which marks the beginning of the current fiscal year – US Coast Guard crews have intercepted more than 5,740 Cubans, a high figure compared to previous years.
At the start of 2023, the Washington government implemented a policy of welcoming 30,000 migrants per month from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua.
At the same time, it will immediately expel migrants from countries that attempt to illegally cross the southern border of its territory into Mexico.
Mexico, for its part, has agreed to admit 30,000 migrants per month who are expelled from American territory.
