Through a public statement, the Minister of the Environment, Chilean politician Maisa Rojas, ruled out that she has announced a modification to the fuel tax, and said that her answer in an interview referred in general to the corrective taxes being promoted by the Executive.

“Regarding the interview on EmolTV published yesterday, it is necessary to make a clarification on the subject of the so-called corrective taxes. Although the question referred to the specific tax on fuels, my answer pointed to corrective taxes in general, where green taxes are included”, said the Secretary of State.

She also added that “for several months the government has been working on a proposal for corrective taxes. Even a public process of social dialogues was opened to know the positions of the interested sectors. The content of this initiative will be made known in the coming weeks. In no case, as Ministry of the Environment, have we announced a modification to the fuel tax, since in matters of taxation it is the Ministry of Finance that makes the announcements”.

The news of a possible increase in the specific tax on fuels generated quite a stir. The opposition and also sectors of the ruling party had already announced that they would not vote in favor of this initiative. In addition, the CNTC indicated that the measure is a blow to the pockets of Chileans, since it would have an impact on inflation.
