Mexico’s unemployment rate fell during the fourth quarter of 2022 3% of the economically active population (EAP)a figure lower than the 3.7% of the same period of 2021, reports this Monday the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

“A total of 58.3 million people were employed, 1.7 million more people compared to the same quarter of 2021“Said the autonomous body in its report, in which it reports 1.8 million unemployed.

Likewise, the unemployment rate from October to December is lower than the 3.4% reported by the statistics institute in the third quarter of 2022, based on the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE).

The EAP for the fourth quarter of the year was 60.1 million people aged 15 and over, representing a participation rate of 60.4% and a population 1.4 million higher than that of the three last months of 2021.

There were 4.4 million “underemployed” people, i.e. those who said they had the need and the availability to work longer hours, i.e. 7.5% of the employed population, a percentage lower than the 10.6% of the fourth quarter of 2021.

The regions that recorded the largest year-over-year employment increases were trade, with an increase of 279,000 peoplemanufacturing industry, with 260 millionand catering and accommodation, with 217 million.

Workers in the informal sector in the fourth quarter totaled 32.2 million, bringing the informality rate down to 55.1%, some 0.7 percentage point lower than a year earlier.

The employed population by sector of activity was 62.7% in the tertiary or service sector, 24.9% in the secondary or industrial sector and 11.8% in primary activities.

By gender, women’s EAP from October to December was nearly 24.4 million and men’s was 35.74 million, with an economic participation rate of 46.2% among working-age women and 76 .5% in men.

The employment figures reflect the economic behavior of Mexico, which grew by 3% per year in 2022, according to the timely estimate of Inegi.
