Mexico could support other Latin American countries in evacuating their nationals on the Mexican air force plane that was sent to Romania to pick up some twenty Mexicans, who left Ukraine this week after the conflict worsened, announced Daniel Millán, chief from the office of the foreign secretary.
On the military aircraft, Millán told the press that Mexico is in talks with other Latin American governments to finalize the transfer of their nationals, but did not offer more details.
When asked about the number of people who would be evacuated, the official indicated that the precise figure is not available because there are 22 Mexicans who were transferred to Romania by the authorities, but there is another group that left Ukraine on their own.
The Boeing 737-800 of the Mexican air force has capacity for about 160 people. On the flight that departed on Sunday from Mexico City to Romania, 23 soldiers are traveling -13 of them crew members-, as well as six officials from the Foreign Ministry and journalists from some local and international media.
Millán reported that some 90 Mexicans remain in the conflict zone in Ukraine, adding that the right time and conditions will be sought to remove them from that country.
The Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Marcelo Ebrard, said on his Twitter account that Mexican families who were evacuated from various parts of Ukraine will be repatriated, but he did not specify figures. It is estimated that 96 Mexican families lived in that country, totaling about 200 people.
The elements of the Secretary of National Defense, Foreign Ministry personnel and the press travel in the Boeing 737-800 of the Mexican air force that is expected to arrive in the Romanian capital on Monday to look for the Mexicans.
