Netflix is a phenomenon that came to radically change the way people watch movies and series. The past decade has seen exceptional growth, including in Mexico, but it seems that the younger generation seems to prefer TikTok.

As every year, the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has just published the results of the National Survey of Consumption of Audiovisual Content, which includes consumption preferences of Mexicans.

Mexican children prefer TikTok to Netflix

The survey was also carried out on children over 7 years of age and thanks to it we know that the average Mexican child consumes 2.6 hours of Internet content per day, which confirms that children spend a lot of time browsing the Internet and are close to getting at 3 hours invested by a Mexican adult.

According to the survey, 65% of Mexican children consume audiovisual content on the Internet and most of them watch movies (56%), series (41%) and cartoons or children’s programs (28%). Likewise, 82% said they used the Internet and 69% mentioned using a social network.

A very interesting point from the survey is that it reveals that boys and girls are more likely to consume TikTok than Netflix. YouTube remains the undisputed leader with 76% YouTube, TikTok in second place with 42% and Netflix fell to third position with 39%.

It is important to note that Netflix requires a monthly payment, while TikTok is a free platform. That said, it makes sense that children and young people prefer it, especially considering that many at their age do not have the financial income to maintain an active subscription.

However, this data is not without attention, especially since before, from 2020 to 2021, Netflix had a much more favorable percentage (37%) compared to TikTok (12%), which speaks of the great reach and acceptance that the application of Chinese origin has had among children.

Netflix continues to be more popular among Mexican adults

With adults this changes a bit, since, although YouTube is their favorite platform in terms of content consumption on the Internet (73%), they prefer to consume Netflix much more (46%) than TikTok (23%). Adults even slightly prefer Facebook (24%) over TikTok.

However, Netflix remains the undisputed king in the list of paid subscription services with 90% preference, followed at a distance by Disney+ with 25% and Prime Video with 18%, despite the fact that the latter is included in the subscription. from Amazon Prime.

The preferred device to consume content on the Internet is naturally the cell phone (80%) and the main type of content consumed in Mexico are movies (54%) and series (47%).
