Mexican actress Ana Ofelia Murguía died this Sunday at the age of 90, informed the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature (INBAL) and the Ministry of Culture, although so far the causes of her death are unknown.
“With deep sadness we regret the sensitive demise of the first actress Ana Ofelia Murguía, who was part of the stable cast of the @CNTeatromx (National Theater Company) of INBAL and whose artistic career was vital for the performing arts in Mexico,” exposed the INBAL in the social network X.
It also sent condolences and hugs “with affection” to his family and friends.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s Ministry of Culture also lamented “the sensitive passing” of the actress who was recognized for her “outstanding” career in theater, film and television. “Her great acting quality will remain in the artistic memory of Mexico,” the agency said.
For its part, the Film Library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) shared a message on the death of the film, theater and television actress, who was born on December 8, 1933, in Mexico City.
“We mourn the death of Mexican film, theater and television actress Ana Ofelia Murguía,” said the UNAM Film Archive.
The actress had a career of more than 40 years, in which she won four times the Ariel Award for Best Female Co-Actress for the films ‘Cadena perpetua’ (1979), ‘Los motivos de Luz’ (1986), ‘La reina de la noche’ (1996). In 2011 she was awarded the Golden Ariel for her career.
She also received awards such as the silver Mayahuel award for her career at the Guadalajara Film Festival, as well as the ‘My Life in the Theater’ medal from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Ingmar Bergman Chair Medal, which she received in 2023.
A graduate of INBAL’s National School of Theatrical Art, she has collaborated in more than 70 plays and more than 90 films.
Recently, she voiced the character of ‘Mama Coco’ in the Disney Pixar animated film ‘Coco’.
