The late goal of Argentine Darío Benedetto (85) was not enough for Marseille to rescue something positive from their match against Nîmes, which took the Velodrome 2-1 victory despite arriving as bottom of Ligue 1.

The Swedish Niclas Eliasson was the architect of the triumph of Nîmes with a double (55 and 58) against a Marseille that missed a penalty, through Floriant Thauvin, in the first half (35).

“The first of all is to apologize to our fans (…) We were very bad and we paid dearly. We run the risk of losing the train of the leading teams,” lamented Marseille coach André Villas-Boas, who qualified the match of his team as “miserable”.

“There were many tactical errors, but above all it was a problem of wanting (to win). I am worried about the future,” he explained at a press conference.

With this defeat, Marseille loses the chance to get closer to the Ligue 1 podium, staying in 6th place with 32 points, seven behind PSG and Lille (2nd and 3rd) and eight behind leaders Lyon.

Nîmes, for their part, left the last position of the classification and surpassed Dijon and Lorient, whose match of the 20th date of Ligue 1 was postponed due to numerous positive cases of covid-19.

This Saturday, Paris SG, who beat Marseille in the Tournament of Champions (French Super Cup) on Wednesday, will seek the provisional leadership of the championship on their trip to Angers (7th).
