the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa received on Monday the medal of Order of Merit at the rank of Grand Cross in the Municipal Theater of Lima. In his speech, the Nobel Prize for Literature referred to the interference of certain Latin American countries in the political crisis that Peru is going through.
Vargas Llosa said that currently countries can “choose to be rich or poor, civilized or barbaric”, but the fate will depend on the people. Referring to Latin America, he said each nation has made “first-rate contributions to universal culture”. However, he blamed “demagoguery and incapacity” for his failure.
“You can say something similar about many Latin American countries. These countries have also made first-rate contributions to universal culture, but in the political and economic field, due to the demagoguery and incapacity learn from the mistakes of the past, they have regressed, and for this reason millions of Latin Americans live in misery and despair,” he mentioned.
He also questioned that some governments of other countries are intervening and giving “lessons” to Peru. And he even said that they “intend” to destroy democracy so that it looks like a dictatorship compared to other countries. In turn, he described the efforts of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO), Gustavo Petro, Alberto Fernandez and Luis Arce Catacora as “populists”.
“How ironic that some of the governments of these countries believe they must today give lessons in Peru! And, what is worse, they are trying to destroy our democracy to align our country with the dictatorships of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, or with the demagogic and populist governments of Mexico, Colombia, Argentina or Bolivia. No, the ideas and models that Peru should be inspired by are those that have led countries with far fewer resources than ours to be among the most modern and prosperous places on the planet,” he said. he asserted in his speech.
He is also a member of the French Academy He noted that the country was considered one of the most advanced civilizations in the Americas. However, due to the “fault” of the “dictatorship, violence, corruption and statism, it has only lost ground.
“(…) because of dictatorships, violence, corruption and statism, it has lost ground to other countries in the region and to the rest of the world. The responsibility for all this is above all ours, and not that of third countries, as the ignorant believe, and it is our duty to work to change the course and restore Peru to the place it deserves”, a- he said in his speech.
Vargas Llosa claimed the country had gone through “a serious crisis” in reference to the failed self-coup of Pedro Castillo – who is serving 18 months in preventive detention for the alleged crime of rebellion.
Peru has been going through a serious crisis in recent months due to a fortunately failed coup attempt and the efforts of extremist groups to end legality and democracy. Unfortunately, they had the support of some foreign governments and some media.
At the ceremony was present Jose Williams Zapata, President of the Congress of the Republic; and parliamentarians María del Carmen Alva and Edward Málaga. In addition, other public authorities and his wife still Patricia Llosa.
The decoration was presented by the mayor of Lima, Rafael Lopez Aliaga, who flattered the writer and thanked him for his contribution to literature. A few weeks earlier, Vargas Llosa had also received the Order of the Sun awarded by the President of the Republic, At Bolarte.
