President Luis Abinader announced this Thursday the deployment of the Armed Forces to the streets, together with the National Police of the Dominican Republic to combat crime.

The president acknowledged that in the last three weeks crime in the country has experienced a “significant increase” and attributed it to the effects of the reopening after confinement due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Abinader did not specify the number of members that will be assigned to security on public roads, but he specified that they will use high technology and intelligence to combat violence.

“This government is working and will continue to work so that there is true peace and tranquility based on respect for human rights, but also on the firmness of our law enforcement forces,” Abinader said.

The president reported that the joint operation will begin on Thursday afternoon.

Abinader led the meeting of the Superior Police Council at the headquarters of the National Police of the Dominican Republic.
