Toronto (Canada), 24 Feb. A Canadian judge ordered this Friday to assess whether the driver of a municipal bus who drove his vehicle into a daycare center on February 8 can be held criminally responsible for his actions.

The driver, Pierre Ny St-Amand, 51, appeared before a judge today in the city of Laval, north of Montreal, where the incident took place in which two children died and six others were been injured.

The results of a psychiatric evaluation which was carried out earlier and which was made public this Friday indicate that St-Amand is fit to stand trial, since he is able to understand the judicial process.

But Julien Lespérance Hudon, the defendant’s lawyer, asked the judge that St-Amand be evaluated to also determine if the driver was suffering from some type of mental disorder when he hit his bus in the daycare center, which will determine if he is criminally responsible. of his actions.

St-Amand, detained since February 8, will appear in court on March 28, when the results of the new assessment are available.

According to witnesses to the incident, St-Amand made no attempt to stop or avoid the nursery.

After the impact, the driver, who had worked for 10 years for the municipal transport company, the Société de transport de Laval (STL), screamed out of the vehicle completely naked.

Several parents dropping their children off at daycare at the time had to use force to restrain him.

Jacob Gauther, 4, and Maeva David, 5, were killed by the bus. ECE
