Santiago de Chile, March 5. Chilean Nicolas Jarry won the 250 ATP Open in Santiago, Chile today beating Argentinean Tomás Martín Etcheverry 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 in yet another exercise in survival.

As had already happened in previous matches, the Chilean, world number 87, started badly, distracted and failed, especially on the second serve and was forced to return from Etcheverry who failed to take advantage of the cracks of his rival, despite the charging advantage also in the second set.

But with two games behind (4-2) and very bright prospects, Jarry caught his breath and came back to life. He improved his stats on the second serve, consolidated the points won on the first, and with great difficulty but in a sustained fashion reversed the negative trend and brought the set to a tie-break and leveled the match.

In the third, and supported by the intense Chilean public, which filled the scaffolding erected in the Jesuit complex of San Carlos de Apoquindo, the clash turned into a party. Jarry, already safe from all blows, was a cyclone against the Argentinian, 76th in the world, whose arm was shrinking.

With this long victory, the second of an ATP tournament after Bastad in 2019, the Chilean jumps up the rankings and remains two places away from entering the top 50. EFE
