Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro arrived in Moscow on Tuesday before meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Brazilian government, the presidents will discuss “economic, commercial and political” relations between their countries. Bolsonaro and his team will stay in a hotel for the rest of this Tuesday and will undergo several covid-19 tests before meeting with Putin.

Brazilian Defense Minister Walter Souza Braga Netto and Foreign Minister Carlos Alberto França traveled with Bolsonaro to Moscow, and will meet with their Russian counterparts during the trip to discuss military cooperation.

During his stay in Moscow, Bolsonaro and his entourage also have meetings planned with the president of the Lower House of the Russian Parliament (Duma) and with Russian businessmen.

The trip has drawn criticism in Brazil for Bolsonaro’s visit to Moscow at a time of heightened tension between Russia, Ukraine and NATO countries, due to the build-up of Russian forces and Russian military exercises near the Ukrainian border.
