DUBAI (AP) — Iran has pardoned 22,000 people detained during recent protests that have swept the country, Iran’s judiciary chief said Monday.
Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejehi announced the figure in statements reported by state news agency IRNA.
State media previously reported that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may pardon many of those detained during protests ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
The protests began in September following the death of a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini after being detained by the country’s vice squad.
