The District Department of Education announced that for the first time Bogota will have training in International Baccalaureate of Public Education, this as part of the district’s strategy to close education gaps.

According to the entity, this achievement marks a milestone in the country with transformative proposals in education for improve the quality of training. The Secretariat explained that this initiative will seek 10 district schools to be part of the International Baccalaureate World.

Based on this, the Ministry of Education pointed out that it was one of the more ambitious and solid strategies which is offered worldwide and will provide an educational vision that will promote the comprehensive education of students and contribute to the development of 21st century skills.

During the first stage of implementation of this strategy, the district has indicated that Bogotá will benefit from approximately 3,400 young people in secondary education from 10 of the best official schools

According to the district, this qualification was generated from the progress of the Route of Educational Excellence proposed by the Office of the Mayor of Bogotá for those who “were highlighted among other aspects for progress in bilingualism, in running the Saber 11 exam results and these are accredited schools,” the administration explained.

Institutions that have been selected by the Ministry of Education for progress in the training process They are located in the municipalities of: Bosa, Engativá, Antonio Nariño, Los Mártires, Suba, Fontibón, Puente Aranda and Rafael Uribe Uribe.

These establishments two of the programs will be implemented from 2024 offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization:

The Ministry of Education explained that through this program, students have access to personalized professional training in the last two years of secondary schoolfrom reinforcements in practical learning and adapted to real life.

In turn, it will seek to help students develop skills and competencies necessary for the life project; which will enable these young people to reach better prepared professional programs, to plan and use an entrepreneurial project or get a job according to your profile and interests.

In this regard, the Ministry of Education clarified that the program aims to produce students who acquire excellent breadth and depth in their academic knowledge, while reinforce the learning of a second language.

For this, each establishment, within the framework of its autonomy, will select the subjects which correspond to its profile so as to reinforce the development of its Institutional Pedagogical Project (PEI) as well as the particular accent of each one.

“The International Baccalaureate gives us the opportunity to contribute to the formation of global citizens with a global outlook and critical thinking, allowing the access to new knowledge networks with other institutionsexchanges of knowledge between educational directors, teachers and students in Colombia and around the world,” added Edna Bonilla, Secretary of Education.

According to figures provided by the International Baccalaureate Organization (OBI), more than 5,600 schools in 160 countries around the world currently offer the IB. Of this number, the 48% of schools are official.

In the case of Colombia, 61 institutions have training for the International Baccalaureate, of which only one is public (located in Cali), which began its process in 2014.

“This program offers great opportunities for students, trains young people who are united, informed, capable of contributing to creating a world better and more peaceful, within the framework of intercultural understanding and respect,” the Ministry of Education added.

Finally, according to the route to be followed by the district regarding this initiative, in 2025 the first class of the international baccalaureate program of public schools in Bogotá will graduate.
