Hernando de Soto urges Dina Boluarte to resign to stop the crisis

Faced with the refusal of Congress of the Republic After approving an election anticipation project, various personalities began to propose alternative solutions to call new elections. Among these, the resignation of To Boluarte for president; however, the Head of State has indicated that this will not happen. For its part, Hernando Soto urges that such a possibility be considered in order to stem the crisis.

For him former presidential candidate, Boluarte’s departure would be called a patriotic act amid the serious crisis unleashed over the past two months. “If we have an open discussion about what the resignation means, which basically opens up the possibility of the country entering a new stage in which new options and a conscious people come (…) his resignation would not be a loss, but it would rather be an act patrioticheroic,” he said.

The call for new elections would be an opportunity to get out of the trap in which both the legislative and executive powers find themselves, according to the economist. “They haven’t done it for a year and a half (okay), to assume that will change is an illusion,” he added in an interview with Exitosa Noticias. If Boluarte’s resignation materializes, parliament should call an election immediately.

“The Constitution and laws of Peru state that if the president resigns as president, Congress must automatically call an election. This would allow, then, that instead of getting lost in gossip, between accusations (…) we can launch a national debate on what are the underlying problems of Peru”, he said. It is estimated that the elections would take place within nine months of the resignation.

De Soto is convinced that “this government no longer gives”; However, this is a position contrary to that of the parliamentarians who defended him in the legislative elections two years ago. From Avanza País, the position that the Head of State must remain in power and control the crisis from the Palace has been defended. Initially, they supported the executive’s plan to hold elections in 2024.

Prime Minister Alberto Otárola has confirmed that President Boluarte will not present her resignation letter and that she will step down from office before 2026 if Congress approves the plan to bring the elections forward. “We are a constitutional government. The expression of the government is embodied in two bills,” he said, referring to the initiatives that were rejected in parliament.

“The first that was sent to Congress proposed an anticipation of the elections. When it was approved, another project was proposed, understanding the sense of urgency the country had at that time. It is the expression of the government. What happened was that it was discussed in Congress and we had to continue to govern and reassure the country,” Otárola reported.

From the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion, its head, Julio Demartini, stressed that the current government is not in transition, but has assumed the task of completing the constitutional period 2021-2026. It is therefore up to the national representation to decide if it ends earlier than expected. In order to encourage the advancement of the elections, the Head of State met various political forces represented and not in Congress.

Representatives of the Frente Esperanza party and the purple party mentioned the resignation of the president as a way out of the crisis during their meeting with her. Both groups revealed that the head of state had made it clear that this would not happen.
