Several environmental activistsincluding Swedish Greta Thunbergwere forced out this Wednesday for block access to various ministries in Oslo in protest against construction of wind turbines in Norwegian Lapland.
Groups of militants blocked the entrance to the Ministry of Petroleum and Energybut today they have extended their protest to access points in three other departments, prompting the authorities to order their eviction.
Thunberg, like a dozen environmentalists, was forcibly moved from the entrance to the Ministry of Finance and blown into the air a hundred meters away, while the demonstrators shouted “Let the mountains live”then left the scene, according to the images broadcast live on the newspaper’s website The daily.
Activists are calling on the government to implement an October 2021 ruling by Norway’s Supreme Court, which ruled that the construction of two wind farms on the Fosen Peninsula did not have a valid license.
The government defends itself by saying that the Supreme Court did not rule on the measures to be taken as a result and assured that it would seek a consensual solution between all parties.
The two wind farms Storheia and Roantotaling 151 generators, are built on the pastures of transhumant reindeer herds in the Indigenous Sami.
Activists refused last night to meet the Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Terje Aaslandand they pretended to do it instead with the prime minister, Jonas Gahr Store.
“We no longer accept empty words in the process. We have two demands: wind turbines must be removed and pastures must be returned“, he said in a statement. NSRwhich brings together various Sami groups.
Activists have pointed out that the government has had 505 days to comply with the sentence and that they have lost faith in it, so it is up to the Prime Minister to resolve the issue.
Due to protests, Aasland today canceled a trip to the UK to join a visit with Crown Princes Haakon and Crown Prince Mette-Marit.
