The comic Hellboy will hit theaters for the third time as a new franchise. On February 18, a report confirmed that a live action is in development under the direction of Brian Taylor (Crank, poison in the blood) and the scenario will be written by Mike Mignola, the creator of the comic, with Chris Golden, his usual collaborator. Additionally, the official title of the project has been announced: Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Filming will begin in March this year in Bulgaria, although the cast has yet to be revealed. The plot will be based on the publication of the same name from 2008. Hellboy and a rookie agent of the BPRD (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense) are stranded in the Appalachians of the USA during the 1950s. In this place, both discover a community who is tormented by witches and who will lead them on the trail of a local demon. This creature has a connection to the protagonist’s past.

In 2004, Guillermo del Toro released his own film version of Hellboy on the big screen. The action, sci-fi and dark fantasy feature film was based on the comic Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, and starred Ron Perlman. The events take place during the Second World War, a time when this red demon was created and then rescued by the Allies to make him a kind of superhero.

The first installment made nearly $100 million at the box office despite its budget of $66 million (it was an expensive movie at the time due to its type of production). It had a sequel in 2008 titled Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and it managed to raise around 160 million with its world premiere. Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones reprized their lead roles.

A little over a decade later, a to restart directed by Neil Marshall and starring David Harbor as Hellboy. It turned out to be a complete failure as it was not well received by the public and did not generate the interest needed to exceed its budget in its earnings. It cost $50 million to film on its own and barely made around $40 million at the box office.
