Senate President Roy Barreras said Tuesday, March 7, 2023 that the national government should under no circumstances negotiate with drug traffickers.
Moreover, in recent weeks he has criticized the main policies of the left-wing president, as he has disagreed with some of the structural points of the health reform, led by the minister. Caroline Liegewith whom he does not have good relations, and now he has done so against the justice reform.
By means of a tweet, the President of the Republic responded to Roy’s statements in 6am by Caracol Radiodenied that his government was going negotiate with drug traffickers and reiterated that peace talks under his administration will only take place with groups that have an origin policy, Otherwise, they must submit to ordinary justice.
“It’s simple: there are no negotiations with drug traffickers. Armed groups with no political origin will negotiate with the prosecution,” he wrote. Gustavo Petro in your profile on this social network.
This statement is due to the fact that Roy Barreras, who is also a member of the Historical pact and played a key role in the Petro’s campaign to the presidency, expressed his opposition to this policy of the current Colombian president.
On Monday, March 6, Barreras asked President Petro not to continue full peace talks, this in front of the alleged clandestine approaches relatives of the president with drug traffickers and illegal groups.
“I hope the government stop unnecessary conversations and sassy with drug traffickers because it ends up undermining the goal of total peace,” the Senate Speaker said.
Furthermore, he warned of the damage that this measure would cause, not only to the judicial system of the country, but also to other sectors — because it would be rewarded with total impunity — the crimes that these criminal groups have perpetrated on the National territory.
“It’s useless, useless and harmful talk to the drug traffickers, in front of them what any state should do is bring them to justice“, concluded the senator.
However, he mentioned that drug traffickers could start legal proceedings with the Colombian government once the law is approved. law of submissionbecause the conditions there would be very different from those which exist today in the tribunal de paix.
“Drug dealers cannot surrender Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), there is a submission law in progress, when it is approved, drug traffickers will be able to submit to justice,” the congressman reiterated.
After learning about the possible relationship of the president’s son, Nicolas Petrowith criminal groups, the senator himself assured that the real goal of peace would be affected by this situation and for this reason, no process should be carried out that distracts the real interest from reconciling with the insurgent groups.
“There will be a dismantling of criminal organizations in the law. They harm the peace and the government must concentrate on the dialogues with the ELN and the insurgencies”, argued Roy Barreras.
This possible “rupture” of relations between Barreras and Petro would have consequences in the development of the objectives of his government, since in recent days it has been known that parties like the Conservative, U-day and the Liberalwho declared themselves pro-government and independent at the time, did not give the green light to the support that the current president will need in his major reforms.
