The foundation of Greta Thunberg will donate $120k to the Covax system to fight against “The tragedy of vaccination inequality” in front of the coronavirus pandemic, denounced by the young Swedish activist.
The sum will be paid to the foundation of the World Health Organization (WHO) and will go to “Buy vaccines against coronavirus, within the framework of the global effort for equitable access to vaccines for those most at risk”, announced Monday the WHO it’s a statement.
“The international community must act more to alleviate the tragedy that is vaccination inequality”, denounced the young woman, cited in the statement, before participating in a press conference with the general director of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“We have the means at our disposal to correct the enormous imbalance that exists today in the world in the fight against COVID-19. As with climate change, we must help the most vulnerable first”, underlined Greta Thunberg, who became a star in the fight against climate change after launching a movement of school strikes to demand more action against global warming by the States.
The system Covax is a public-private partnership between the WHO, the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to ensure equitable distribution of the immunizer against COVID-19, especially in 92 impoverished countries.
“I encourage the world community to follow Greta’s example and do what it can to support the Covax, to protect the most vulnerable from this pandemic,” insisted the secretary general of the WHO.
Tedros denounced that in some rich countries, a quarter of the population is already vaccinated against the COVID-19 while in poor countries, that proportion is one in every 500 people.
