Bangalore (India), 25 Feb. G20 finance ministers will attempt on Saturday to reach a joint deal on global instability that overcomes differences over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the United States and Western allies battling around the table to a clear condemnation.

Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors today held the final session of the meeting on “Global Economy, Health and International Taxation”, before presenting the adopted agreement and conclusions of the event , at the first high-level meeting of India’s G20 presidency.

The final statement of the meeting aims to bridge the group’s differences and will be delivered by Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman towards the end of the afternoon today.

However, sources close to the discussions consulted by EFE assured that the adoption of a final decision will be determined in the next few hours.

The meeting takes place on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the same week that India abstained from voting on a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for a ” cessation of hostilities” in this country and the withdrawal of Russian troops, which finally received 141 favorable votes.

India’s position on the conflict is seen as one of the main obstacles preventing G20 ministers from concluding the meeting with the unanimous adoption of a declaration which also addresses other fundamental issues such as the over-indebtedness of countries, the reform of multilateral organizations and aid mechanisms for countries in crisis.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the meetings yesterday with a video message in which he referred to the moment of hostility but made no reference to Russia, despite the meeting taking place on the same day as the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. . . So far, neither Modi nor his government officials have commented directly on the Russian invasion.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also spoke of differences with nations that have not been firm in condemning and isolating Moscow, comments also seen as an allusion to India and China which have seen their trade relations develop with Russia. ECE
