Francisco Remigio Morales Bermudez Cerrutti, Peruvian politician and military man, died Thursday night, according to former congressman Otto Guibovich. He was president of Peru from August 29, 1975 to July 28, 1980 after a coup to Juan Velasco Alvarado.

“On Thursday night, very late, the general died Francisco Morales Bermudez, former Commander General of the Army and also President of Peru. He was a great soldier. I remember that he was a minister in the government of the architect Fernando Belaunde Terry”, Guibovich told GLM.

“He was the protagonist of an important time in our history, complex, but also important. He had the fortitude to make a transition from a de facto government to a democratic government. That is what should be recognized”, he added.

This Friday morning, Remigio Morales-Bermudez, son of the former president, confirmed the death and indicated that it was due to health complications due to his advanced age.
