The Attorney General of the Nation, Francisco Barbosa, continued his program of meetings with Colombian political parties during which structural issues of the national agenda were discussed, mainly due to the legal issues following the policies that President Gustavo Petro intends to carry out within the framework of the total peace.

In March 2023, Prosecutor Barbosa met with spokespersons from the Conservative, Liberal and U parties to discuss justice issues, including the draft law of submission criminal gangs and law of humanization penal and prison policy.

Now it was the party’s turn Democratic Centerwho from the start of the Petro government declared itself opponent. Representative in the Bogotá Chamber Jose Jaime Uscategui He gave details of the meeting his party had with prosecutor Barbosa. The political group led by former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez has called for the benefits that will be granted to criminals in the country to be assessed.

The congressman reported that the First Committee questioned these plans and that they asked that they be “delete urgent message both to the law of submission and to the law of penitentiary humanization”.

Regarding previous meetings, the House Representative for the Liberal Party Juan Carlos Losada He provided details of issues that have been resolved since the first week of March 2023.

“The entire bench of the Liberal Party of the Senate and the House met with the prosecutor Francisco Barbosa and there are several conclusions of this meeting, among which, some very concerning issues for the bench and for the prosecutor who have to do with the humanization law,” he said.

The representatives assured that this law would grant impunity for criminals, since the crimes of terrorism and conspiracy to commit a crime that are committed in the midst of social protest cannot be considered crimes. “It’s really extremely serious, it’s almost like a open incitement to violence during the social protest,” Losada said.

Another of the politicians who expressed concern was Carlos Ardila. The House Representative reported that eight specific submissions were made by the Liberal Party, which were presented during this meeting with the prosecutor.

“Some of them have to do, for example, with the protest crime, why end up mixing protest with terrorism, why end up leaving the crime of lack of food penniless, why include incest in this project,” Ardila said.

He was even more severe and assured that if this law were approved, they would be human rights violated“That raises concerns and there are certain benefits that also have to do with crimes that violate human rights that are also included and that have worried us.”

Following this meeting with the Democratic Center, prosecutor Barbosa told the media that these meetings were very important, because “it is important that in a democracy all voices are heardand in this sense our voice is a technical, constitutional, reasoned voice, which seeks to improve the spirit of the projects,” he concluded.

According to the account of the Attorney General of the Nation, it has been reported that Francisco Barbosa will continue his program of meetings on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 with the party Radical changeand on Friday 17 of the same month with representatives of the green party. These groups will also voice their objections and comments to the Petro government bills.
