The former vice president underwent heart surgery on Wednesday in which a pacemaker was implanted, Mike Pence’s office confirmed.

Pence “experienced symptoms associated with a low heart rate” for the past two weeks and underwent surgery at the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia, according to a statement from his office.

“I am grateful for the prompt professionalism and care of the excellent doctors, nurses and staff at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute,” Pence said in the statement. “[…] My family has been truly blessed by the work of these dedicated health professionals.”

The office recalled that as early as 2016, when he was the Republican candidate for vice presidency, Pence revealed in his medical history that he had been diagnosed with a left bundle branch of the heart, but was asymptomatic.
