NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Five people were fatally shot Sunday night, including a little girl, during the Krewe of Bacchus parade in New Orleans, New Orleans police say.
In addition to the girl, a woman and three men were shot, all of whom were taken to hospital, according to WWL-TV. One of the victims was in critical condition, according to local police number two Hans Ganthier, although he did not specify which victim.
Police said one person was arrested at the scene in connection with the shooting.
“They were able to quickly apprehend the suspect we believe was responsible for this,” Ganthier said.
Two weapons were recovered from the scene, he added. It was unclear if anyone else was involved, he added.
“It’s something we really didn’t want to see,” Ganthier said. “We really wanted it to be a safe Mardi Gras.”
The parade stopped temporarily in the 1500 block of St. Charles Avenue after the shooting.
An official said the parade would continue to “lead away” from the crime scene.
