Europe officially registered more than 900,000 deaths due to the coronavirus (covid-19) since the beginning of the epidemic in December 2019, according to a count made by AFP on Tuesday at 08:45 GMT based on data from health authorities.

The 52 countries and territories of the region, which includes Russia and Turkey, register 900,185 deaths per 40,083,433 cases of contagion, ahead of Latin America and the Caribbean (721,581 deaths per 22,872,052 infections) and the United States / Canada (558,110 dead, 30,406,496 infections).

The worst hit European countries are the United Kingdom, with 125,580 deaths from 4,263,527 infections, followed by Italy (102,499 deaths, 3,238,394 infections), Russia (92,937, 4,409,438), France (90,788, 4,078,133) and Germany (73,656, 2,581,329).

Five countries account for half of the deaths in Europe.

Last week, the region registered an average of 3,000 deaths a day, that is, 2.3% less than the previous week. The region passed a month ago below the threshold of 4,000 deaths a day, for the first time since November.

However, the trend of infections is progressing. On Monday, Europe surpassed the barrier of 40 million infections, making it the region with the most cases in the world.

Regarding the population, the country hardest hit by the pandemic is the Czech Republic with 218 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Belgium (194), Slovenia (189), the United Kingdom (185) and Montenegro (180).

The death figures are based on balances reported daily by the national health authorities and exclude the revisions made later by the statistical institutes based on studies of excess mortality.

Almost 120 million people were infected with covid-19 in the world, of which almost 2.66 million lost their lives since the beginning of the epidemic in December 2019.
