Egypt’s president and US national security adviser Jake Sullivan agreed in talks in Cairo on Wednesday to intensify international efforts in relation to the upcoming elections in Libya, a statement from the Egyptian presidency confirmed.

According to a Reuters report , President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Sullivan also discussed the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, the Great Ethiopian Renaissance (GERD) dam, bilateral relations and the situation in Tunisia, Syria, Yemen and Iraq. . The statement made no mention of human rights, which the White House said Tuesday would also be on the agenda during Sullivan’s visit.

The US official arrived in Cairo after his trips to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. With him was Brett McGurk, White House coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa.

As for Libya, the two sides agreed to strengthen coordination on the withdrawal of foreign forces and the unification of Libyan military institutions. Sisi stressed the importance of sticking with the plan to hold elections in December. The planned elections are part of a UN-led effort to reunify Libya after years of conflict and division, but they face profound challenges.
