DRAMES – The shark attacked an Austrian and a Romanian woman near Hurghada, where authorities have since closed several beaches

A real drama happened in the Red Sea in Egypt. Two tourists, an Austrian and a Romanian, have been killed by a shark near Hurghada, where authorities have closed several beaches since the incident.

“Two women were attacked by a shark while swimming in the Sahel Hachich region, south of Hurghada,” Egypt’s environment ministry said on Sunday, adding that an investigation had been opened. “All activity is prohibited for three days” on the beaches in the south of Hurghada (southeast), indicated Friday an order from the governor of the region, Amr Hanafi. The Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has for its part confirmed “the death of an Austrian national in Egypt”.

A victim with “left arm torn off”

The governor’s decree mentions an “Austrian tourist having had her left arm torn off” by a shark. According to the Austrian press agency APA, the victim, originally from the western region of Tyrol, was 68 years old and had been on vacation in Egypt since the beginning of June with his Egyptian companion.
