The National Electoral Council announced on Sunday the official results of the second round of the presidential election and confirmed the triumph of former right-wing banker Guillermo Lasso.
The five members of the electoral body unanimously signed the ballot minutes, in which Lasso beat his rival, the leftist Andrés Arauz, with 52.36% of the total votes received in the April 11 elections.
After the announcement of the results, a period is opened for eventual challenges, and after these are resolved, the official announcement of the new Ecuadorian president will be made.
The electoral body highlighted that it received 10.83 million votes, from an electoral roll made up of 13.01 million voters.
“It has been shown that we are an honest society that respects honor, dignity and democratic principles,” said Enrique Pita, vice president of the Electoral Council.
Lasso and Arauz came to the ballot on February 7, after obtaining the largest vote among 16 presidential candidates, most of whom did not even reach 4% support.
