MEXICO CITY (AP) — American pitcher Matt Pobereyko, who had a contract with the Saraperos de Saltillo of the Mexican Baseball League, died Saturday of a heart attack, the team announced. He was 31 years old.

Pobereyko signed with the summer league side in December but failed to make his debut.

“The Saraperos de Saltillo board, players and coaching staff mourn the passing of our player Matt Pobereyko, who died of a heart attack,” the team said on their Twitter account.

The team did not provide further details of the death.

Pobereyko, a native of Hammond, Indiana, was a member of the minor league teams Arizona Diamondbacks, New York Mets and Miami Marlins. In the Mexican Summer League he also played with León.

In the Winter League, his last team was the Algodoneros de Guasave and he was part of the Mexican team that recently played in the Caribbean Series, where he pitched against Curacao and the Dominican Republic.

Los Algodoneros have reported that the player died at his home in the United States and they are planning a tribute at their stadium on Sunday at noon.
