TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have agreed to hire Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as their next head coach, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday because they did not close the deal.

Gannon will replace Kliff Kingsbury, who was let go last month after going 4-13 in his fourth season in charge. Gannon will become Arizona’s fourth coach in seven years.

Gannon, 40, has served as Philadelphia’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons and helped rebuild the Eagles defense that reached the Super Bowl last Sunday.

With Gannon leading the block, the Eagles finished the season with the NFL’s second-best defense and third-most sacks in history at 78.

The hiring of Gannon is the first major move by general manager Monti Ossenfort, who arrived last month after Steve Keim agreed to part ways with the team.
