Buffalo Fire Department, New York, were thrown to the ground after an explosion was recorded in a burning building located in the city’s theater district.

The events occurred on Wednesday March 1 and the incident was recorded on video. Footage shows two firefighters on the sidewalk after a large plume of gray smoke suddenly billowed from the fire area.

One of the firefighters who was inside the compound when the explosion occurred he died after being trapped in the collapsing structures. “Today one of our firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Community Rescue Commissioner William Renaldo.

The Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul, regretted the events through a message on his Twitter account: “I am heartbroken by this devastating tragedy in Buffalo. My prayers go out to the loved ones of the brave firefighter who died and to the entire Buffalo Fire Department.”
