At least five soldiers, including members of the Somali special forces trained by the United States known as Danab, have been killed in an ambush by the jihadist group Al Shabaab in the south of the country, official sources confirmed this Sunday.

The heavily armed jihadists attacked a military convoy near the town of Tihsile, about 37 kilometers from Mogadishu, in the early hours of Sunday, according to regional official Abdulkadir Sidii.

The convoy was first hit by a high-powered bomb on the side of the road and was later ambushed by a group of insurgents, Sidii said.

Seven other soldiers were injured during the attack, while four terrorists also lost their lives during the assault, according to Sidii, who had been part of the convoy.

The main target of the attack had been the Danab commander, Al Shabaab later confirmed. Sidii confirmed that the commander had been seriously injured, but was alive.
