At least 109 people have been injured in a derailment of a passenger train near Cairo, authorities have reported.
The incident, the causes of which are under investigation, has occurred on the line between Cairo and Al Mansur, near the town of Touj, Caliubia governorate, in the Nile delta, reports the newspaper ‘Al Ahram’.
At the moment the existence of deaths has not been officially confirmed but sources from the pan-Arab chain Al Arabiya report at least eight deaths in the derailment, which has caused the unhitching of eight wagons.
This could be the most serious incident since March 26, when at least 19 people were killed in the collision of two passenger trains in southern Egypt.
