SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) — Eight people were killed when two boats suspected of being smugglers capsized in waters off San Diego, and rescuers were looking for seven more people on Sunday, authorities said. .
San Diego firefighters said rescuers managed to pull eight bodies from the waters off Black’s Beach on Saturday night, but heavy fog hampered searches overnight.
On Sunday, firefighters and Coast Guard vessels were scanning the area’s waters for more victims.
Daniel Eddy, assistant director of operations for the San Diego Fire and Rescue Department, said there was a large debris field on Black’s Beach, which is jointly owned by San Diego and the state. The location is also known as Torrey Pines City Beach or Torrey Pines State Beach.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Eddie Berrios confirmed eight people were dead and rescuers were looking for at least seven more. He did not know what type of boats they were, but he pointed out that panga-type boats usually arrived at this place.
