MADRID (AP) — Six people have been arrested for involvement in a Copa del Rey match-fixing scheme, Spanish police said Friday.
The duel under investigation is Levante’s 8-0 victory on December 2, 2021 against third division Huracán Melilla. The match took place in Melilla, one of the Spanish enclaves in North Africa.
Police said the six people arrested have Spanish nationality. They gave no other information about their identity.
Authorities became aware of what was happening in the match after numerous bets were placed online and at betting centers in Melilla, police said.
Huracán said it would cooperate fully with authorities and take immediate action against any employee, player or officer involved in a match-fixing scheme.
