Cairo- At least 23 people died and another 25 were injured when a 10-storey residential building collapsed in eastern Cairo, Egypt’s Interior Ministry reported Sunday.

The collapse occurred on Saturday morning for reasons that have not been specified and the number of fatalities has been increasing to more than twenty.

The Civil Protection services “managed to rescue five new bodies from under the rubble of the collapsed property in the Yesr al Suez district, bringing the death toll to 23 and the number of wounded to 25,” the Ministry said in a statement. release.

According to the note, rescue teams were still working to recover two victims trapped under the remains of the building, which consisted of a basement and 10 floors.

Some thirty ambulances came to assist the injured while cranes were sent to remove the debris, according to the document, which did not specify what could be the cause of the collapse.

House block collapses in Egypt are frequent, especially in popular areas, where builders do not take strict measures to ensure the safety of buildings and where there are no rigorous inspections.

This tragedy adds to a black week for Egypt in which the Suez Canal, one of the main sources of income for the State, has been blocked since Tuesday due to a container ship that has been crossed, causing a commotion in the world freight traffic, and registered a railway accident on Friday with at least 19 deaths.
